Re: Applying Politeness Strategies to Teaching Oral Communication

I think the politeness strategies can be applied to any situation in our teaching. Students need to be aware of the power distance and social distance between the speakers for them to make a polite response in the conversation. For example, in the case of the power distance, students need to know th...

Re: Applying Intercultural Rhetoric (IR) to Teaching Business Writing: Request Letter

I think the IR is very useful in bringing awareness of cultural differences to our students. It is especially useful in helping our students to understand some moves are required and some are optional, depending on the power distance or relationships. In today's workshop, we are able to see how this...

Re: Applying Intercultural Rhetoric (IR) to the Instructional Design of Business Email Teaching: Responding to a request

As I am teaching EAP speaking classes, students are required to make academic presentations such as seminar or conference presentations. In the formal acadecmi presentations, there are certain moves and this is actually important in the academic culture (as part of the small cultures). If NOT taught...

Re: Applying politeness strategies to teaching English speaking courses

As making request or declining invitaion would be very face threatening, it is important to teach our students some politeness strategies. One way to teach students to apply politeness strategies is to give scenarios and ask students to make request or decline invitaion first without instruction. Af...

Re: The effect of explicit pragmatics instruction on business writing : Request e-mails

I agree that instruction for pragmatics has to be explicit, for students need to know the politeness strategies before they can use the right phrases in their email writing. As the examples in the workshop showed, without instruction, students would write an email that is not culturally appropriate ...

Re: Instructional strategies on writing:describing graphs

For intermediate students, it is important to guide students step by step, like what Jenny has demonstrated in today's workshop. It is useful to use comprehension questions, multiple chioce questions and fill-in-the-blank before asking students to complete the writing task. However, for high-interme...

Re: Applying speech act theory in the instruction of conversational strategies

1. It's important to teach conversation strategies by applying speech act theory for cross-cultural communicative purposes because only by doing so, students will not make socially inappropriate mistakes. For example, I often get emails from students like "tell me a time when you are available,...

Re: How to teach descriptive writing by similes and metaphors in reading and writing

1. It is important to teach our students similes and metaphors because they are essential parts in descriptive writing. By using similes and metaphors, students can add more imagery or sensory words to make their writing more vivid (so that the readers have a picture or imagination in their mind). I...

Re: Instruction of oral communicative tasks in global business communication context: Complaint and problem solving as e

As discussed in this session, I agree with the point that some students are confused with the major points and the details. Very often, they start with the details first, and keep on rephrasing or paraphrasing over and over again; however, they forget to state the main points or they put it at the v...
