I think what poses a great challenge for our students when they learn to propose solutions is that they lack the background knowledge in workplace English. For example, their apology may sound more like excuses, and it's also not easy for them to explain the problem that caused the complaint in the first place. So lessons for teachers, using structured input to help learners build up domain knowledge is prerequisite to teaching them to propose appropriate and effective solutions.

As a teacher, I think we need to understand the structure of spoken responses in different contexts so that we can teach students the knowledge they need.

I would like to respond to the question on "What are the difficulties for students to “propose a solution”?
Because thsi speaking task including two major parts: Listening to the problem ( complaint) and respond by speaking to the problem (including address, apology, repeated problems, giving explanations for the problems and then solution proposing.

On listening part: It is very difficult for learners to identify their own roles in this kind of speech act.
On speaking part: It is much more difficult for learners to propose a "reasonable & plausible" so;ution which can satisfy the caller's expectation. This requires workplace communication skills and the understanding of workplace contexts. Most of our learners do NOT have this.

Q2: Teachers need to recognize knowledge in at least 2 aspects. In the first aspect, it's about recognizing conversation strategies and phrases. In the second aspect, it's about recognizing the content/context/cultural background of the conversation.

Q3: The goal of teaching speaking skills is to reach communication goals in a fluent, socailly-accepted, and culturally-appropriated way.

In dealing with problem solving tasks, one of the most challenging parts can be how learners can come up with "appropriate" solutions. For example, learners might not be familiar with business contexts. It's difficult for them to provide practical solutions. Teachers play an important role in the process. Through discussion or other listening or reading input, learners might be able to develop awareness gradually.

Q1: What difficulties do we have when teaching speaking?

The challenge I face when teaching speaking is that students have less awareness on the context when they have conversation or have a talk. Besides, they also lack the structures and appropriate expression for different contexts.
