How could we apply the five rhetorical moves in our teaching?
What teaching and learning difficulties can we expect within or beyond the IR framework? (Ex. limitations)

I think the IR is very useful in bringing awareness of cultural differences to our students. It is especially useful in helping our students to understand some moves are required and some are optional, depending on the power distance or relationships. In today's workshop, we are able to see how this can be applied to request letters; it would be helpful if we can learn more about how IR is applied to different types of business writing.

For the limitation of the IR framework, it seems that IR tends to focus more on the pattern instead of the content, but for ESP (business English) learners who may lack the background knowledge in the business context, further instruction on scaffolding such knowledge should be necessary to help them actually write up an effective and acceptable business letter.

I think rhetorical moves provide learners a new perspective when they learn business writing.
That allows learners to go beyond letter structures and see the intertextuality between different business genres and potential moves.
This practice may also help learners consider contextualization, styles, and rhetorical modes when they write letters.

One of the teaching difficulties in using IR in business writing is that most students do not have sufficient background knowledge of a foreign culture. They might be come up with offending or impolite requests/demands to the receiver; worst of all, without knowing about it. Writing sampes or contexts should be provided as to scaffold the students become competible writers, at the same time, polite writers.

1. We can probably think of different scenarios for students to identify 1. what the social relationship between the recipient and the writer is 2. what the purpose of the letter should be 3. giving them more time to think about the background information and elaboration parts. For these two parts. I think I will alllow students more flexibility by deciding if the background is reasonable by open discussion in class.

The five rhetorical moves provide a useful framework for teaching email writing. We could ask students to write business letters with the assigned topics or contexts. Then, show the defination of ach move, ask students to clarifiy the moves from the sample letters and the letters written by them, and compare the differences. The training could help students build up their awareness of writing an appropirate business letter based on the context.

Intercultural Rhetoric(IR) can be very helpful to Chinese teaching as well. For Chinese learners, it is one of the most challenging part for them to write Chinese(either essay or letter) in "Chinese style." Through analyzing the rhetorical moves, it could be an clear and specific guide to help students see the cultural difference and raise the awareness of the cultural factor in communicating in different languages and cultures.
